OS and software version
Microsoft Windows 10 x64 “1703” Creator Update
AMD Crimson Relive “Press” 17.10.1711 (non-WHQL) for Win10 x64
This is my first attempt to write a Graphic card review with limited time and under partial NDA (AIB NDA). I have limited time to access the testing platform (listed as above) and I need time to setup hardware compatibilty and resolve software issue.
In the middle of the testing, a new "Retail" VBIOS provided by AIB, as a result all bench have to redo again before I have to return the graphic card to vendor for other press to test! As a result the gaming test part have been mostly skipped as I ran out of time.
Feature
- RX580 support FreeSync 2.0

Synthetic Benchmark Test
Unigine Superposition
- a new Benchmarck that is available to test your GPU capaicity , it does have VR Ready benchmark to see if your graphic card is up to the task for VR
All the tests were using new VBIOS and no overclocking

Gaming Test (Limited)
Due to time constrain, and some technical issues due to late pre-launch VBIOS update.
Gaming benchmark test is limited. Originally, I have planned Civilization VI, GTA V, Battlefield 1 , Tomb Raider, World of Warships as these are popular games out there. However in the end I ran out of time.
Battlefield 1 and Tome Raider using DX12 cannot screen capture for unknown reason. I tried FRAPS and MSI Afterburner OSD feature but both cannot capture the screen.
Also I was having game updating issues with Origin/Uplay.
In the end only Civilization VI , Tomb Raider was able to run.
Battlefield 1 will crash when attempt screen capture with FRAPS nor MSI Afterburner.
Lesson learnt , I will prepare my test platform (software) more in advance.
Civilization VI
RX580 have no issue running it.

Conclusion
If you are expecting RX580 to be something new, RX580 is not VEGA. This is just a "respin" of RX480 with improved base clock and a little more headroom for overclocking
(Stock 1.320 GHz , however Turbo to 1.4GHz depends on different AIB design)
RX580 is just a re-branded RX480, the memory clock had been pushed to 2GHz (aka 8GHz).
During the overclocking test I was barely able to push the GPU clock to 1485MHz to complete TimeSpy once, but it crashed when I attempt to screencap.
For unknown reason, the memory (Samsung?) was not overclocking friendly, any clock higher than 2010 MHz will crash.
The power efficiency have not improved, the higher clock consumes more power.
However on performance part, RX580 managed to match GTX1060 6GB (non- 9GHz GDDR5 version) closer. RX580 will be more competitive against GTX1060 for now, however when nVIDIA release GTX1060 with 9GHz memory chip, the performance gap will be pulled away again....
Let's hope AMD VEGA will be more competitive against GTX1070 in the coming month....
