Originally deployed in 1993, PCI bus will not be supported by performance-mainstream and value chipsets from Intel Corp., the globe’s largest supplier of core-logic sets and microprocessors. As a result, mainboard manufacturers and makers of peripheral cards will have to switch to PCI Express-supporting chips or to stick with other chipsets.

According to sources familiar with Intel’s plans, the company’s H67, P67 and H61 core-logic sets – which are intended for code-named Sandy-Bridge platforms with LGA1155 form-factors – will no longer support PCI bus. At the same time, business- and enterprise-oriented Q67, Q65 and B65 will retain for support of PCI bus.

Considering the fact that a lot of controllers, including audio processors and some outdated network chips, still use outdated PCI bus. As a result, mainboard makers utilizing them will have to replace the older chips with newer PCIe flavours. Moreover, those consumers, who still use products like Sound Blaster PCI audio cards will also have to get something more contemporary.

Considering the fact that PCI (33MHz, 32-bit) bus only provides up to 133MB/s of bandwidth, it is natural that its performance is no longer relevant for modern personal computers.

Intel did not comment on the news-story.

That means many of the present PCI cards, DVB-TH, ASUS sound Card won\'t be compatible with new boards?!

It may be lucky that I sold my Asus Xonar Essence ST.

一早應該啦

PCI 1993年發表用以取代ISA, ISA 2000年已經消失於主流市場
PCI-E 2003年發表用以取代PCI, PCI 2010年仲係主流

I don\'t know but it seems some high end sound cards like Asus Xonar Essence ST/STX are native PCI, the PCI-E of the STX version is actually using a PCI - PCI-E bridge.
I heard people claiming about that PCI slot is capapble of providing a better sound quality, due to its long development as well as error handling, is that true?

PCI-E 1.0同2.0的error handling都唔差

what is the difference in latency between PCI and PCI-E?
I just know with the PCi PCI-E bridge there is some latency.

你見得一兩間夠膽出Native PCI-E就知乜事，Serial latency係好惡搞。

It has been Dark Age for Sound Card since Creative lost the main market to "Realtek" Onboard .....

Ask most end-user out there, how many of them will purchase a sound card for better gaming experience , 9.5 out of 10 user will not purchase one

Even new games nowadays don\'t require "EAX" Hardware Support for better sound
Just look at Battlefield : Bad Company 2

890FX + SB850 still support PCI and I can use my trusty Creative X-Fi

in fact this is not a good news

PCI-E gives many advantages that PCI cannot do, e.g. dedicated bandwidth for each device
