Including exports, shipments of smartphones by China-based vendors totaled 141.1 million units in the first quarter of 2018, decreasing 1.2% from a year earlier, Digitimes Research estimates.

With the exception of Xiaomi Technology, all major smartphone vendors in China suffered an over 30% sequential shipment declines in the first quarter due to seasonal factors and the impact of Lunar New Year holidays, which fell in mid-February, Digitimes Research has found.

In terms of shipment volume, Huawei, Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo were the top-four local brands in China in the first quarter of 2018 with a combined market share of over 60%, up 4.8pp as compared to the market share held by the previous top-four vendors (Huawei, Oppo, Vivo and Lenovo) a year earlier. Lenovo ranked fifth in the first quarter of 2018 but with its market share lagging significantly far behind the No. 4 vendor Vivo.

Looking forward, smartphone shipments by China's top-four vendors are expected to grow 16.6% on quarter and 13% on year sequentially in the second quarter of 2018, buoyed by the launch of new models.

Digitimes Research believes that China's smartphone vendors are expected to exert efforts to ramp up the ratios of their overseas shipments so as to cushion the impacts caused by the maturing smartphone market in China.
