Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has seen its 28nm process utilization rate fall to 65-70% recently, due to a cutback of customer orders, according to industry sources.
Qualcomm has cut its 28nm chip orders to TSMC as the fabless firm is engaged in inventory adjustment, the sources indicated. AMD, another major 28nm chip customer of TSMC, has also slowed down its pace of orders due to a seasonal drop in chip demand for games consoles, the sources said.
Meanwhile, the schedule for TSMC to manufacture MediaTek's 4G chips has been delayed due to some modifications being made in the chip design, the sources noted.
However, TSMC's 28nm process utilization rate is set to start climbing in January or February 2013, paving the way for the foundry to report brisk sales for the second quarter of 2014 and the following two quarters, the sources believe.
A ramp-up of 20nm chip production will also begin to make a positive contribution to TSMC's revenues in the second quarter of 2014, the sources pointed out. For the newer node process, the foundry has attained tape-out for 30 IC products, the sources said.
Qualcomm就奇怪啦, 間間廠都用佢, 有咩要adjust?
AMD Q2 console sales low?
