AMD said to acquire SATA Express IP from ASMedia for next-generation platform
http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20140519PD214.html引用:AMD reportedly will cooperate with Taiwan-based ASMedia Technology, a subsidiary of Asustek Computer, to integrate transmission interfaces such as SATA Express onto its next-generation platform, according to sources from the upstream supply chain. The partnership will bring ASMedia income from licensing fees and the partnership should start contributing profits in 2015.
AMD plans to establish the partnership by having ASMedia share its silicon intellectual property (SIP) or by acquiring licenses. For motherboard players and system integrators, the cooperation will save them costs and time as they will not need to purchase chips for SATA Express from third-party chipmakers, the sources noted.
AMD is hoping the strong integration of its platform will help attract demand from partners and relatively strengthen its APU and graphics cards' competitiveness.
Since ASMedia's president is also in charge of Asustek's motherboard purchasing and R&D, the cooperation will also tighten the relationship between the CPU maker and Asustek.
Asustek has already adopted the SATA Express interface in some of its new Intel 9-series motherboards.
ASMedia achieved earnings per share (EPS) of NT$0.85 (US$0.03) in the first quarter of 2014 and the EPS for 2014 has a chance to reach NT$3, up from NT$1.54 in 2013.
