http://www.geek.com/news/geeknews/2006Jan/bch20060224034964.htm AMD is not going to rest comfortably waiting for Intel to take back the performance crown. Instead, reports of a K8L model are being touted, and one in particular that, apart from other variants that are still unreported, will have double the number of floating point units, making the FPU perform at least 1.5x as well as it does today. It is reported that Intel\'s Next-Generation Microarchitecture (NGMA), to include Conroe and Woodcrest, will have strong integer performance but weaker FPU performance, indicating a type of imbalance. Today, AMD\'s K8-based products have a relatively strong integer performance and a definitely strong FPU performance, with SPEC scores demonstrating exactly that (a big download of more than 4,600 results). If AMD were to utilize its recently licensed ZRAM technology (see our coverage) and were to double the number of FPU units with K8L as well as adding some other as of yet unannounced design features, we may just have us a horse race again after all--despite Intel\'s recent claims of 20% performance leadership when its NGMA products are released (see our coverage). :)
