Yes I'm connecting my external DAC with optical. My laptop has SPDIF and optical output.

If you are only passing through digital signal to your external DAC, you don't really need a good sound card at all, since its function is just passing through signals.

If we are talking about proprietary surround sound encoding like DTS-HD/Dolby TrueHD then it is very tricky and expensive to get certified external DAC.
