In fact, it will be serving many functions,
A 24/7 server that may host website and ftp, used as htpc and also some simulation using Matlab.
I am going to learn more about setting up Linux based server using it but I would use Virtual machine, so I need a high processing power PC.

As I am connecting it to TV, not proposed to buy a monitor, I will access it mainly by remote desktop via my notebook.

As far as I know, Xeon is for mission-critical server while i7 is all-rounded multi-purpose with relatively higher c/p ratio consumer-line product.  Is there anything specific you want to test on Xeon?  or, you are actually testing Xeon?
