Or buy Office for University (if eligible), it's quite cheap ($6xx for 4 years, 2 PCs)

....somehow it's hard to suggest apps to users;
instead you should find out how you want to use your device, and then install the apps required.

For daily use, the apps I got were simply Weather, Calendar, Mail, Facebook, Skype and so on.

There is something called Surface Tweak Tool, sounds interesting and allows you to modify more to fit the way you use,
but as a 3rd party software modifying the system, do backup and use on your own risk:

I pretty much believe it would work the same way;
Surface Pro 2 has mostly the same hardware exact the CPU and chipset, you may see how the people feedback
