Depends on boards, some brands like Intel actually doesn't allow bit-stream via DVI.
Btw, in the past when I was using 4850 I used DVI to output audio with the stock converter provided.

DVI can Bit-Stream, but you will need a suitable converter, please refer to those ATi HD 4xxx reference boards which have only DVI-I outputs.
