AMD's 7nm CPU and GPU are expected to be adopted by Sony in its next-generation PlayStation and the processors are estimated to be ready in the third quarter of 2020 for the games console's expected release in the second half of 2020, according to industry sources.

The sources from the IC back-end services sector noted that the processors' packaging and testing will be handled by Advanced Semiconductor Engineering (ASE) and Siliconware Precision Industries (SPIL).

With GlobalFoundries abandoning the development of 7nm process, AMD has been outsourcing 7nm chip production to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and the volumes are expected to make AMD one of the top clients of the Taiwan-based foundry.

TSMC and ASE declined to comment on specific clients or orders.

The PlayStation 4 so far has generated nearly 100 million in unit sales to become one of the top-selling devices. The next-generation console is expected to remain the center of attention in the gaming market, the sources said.

Since Intel has shifted a majority of its resources to compete in the 5G chip and high-end server processor markets, AMD has been able to quickly catch up in the entry-level to mid-range traditional CPU and mid-range server CPU areas and may even obtain around a 10% share in the overall server CPU market.

In additional news, packaging and testing service providers have also seen increased orders from Japan-based brand vendors for 8K Ultra HD SoCs and will begin small-volume production for the SoCs at the end of 2019.

To promote the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan's public broadcasting organization NHK has recently begun broadcasting in 8K Ultra HD signal that may help simulate replacement demand for 8K TVs in the nation in 2019.
