I would not suggest this one if you really look for a tablet;
it's too heavy, too short battery life, and too few apps on Windows 8.
iPad Air would be the best option out there considering a tablet for portability and usability.

Surface Pro would be great only if you want a light notebook replacement, and would use it mainly when settled.
I am going to get a monitor in my office and connect it to Surface Pro, in that way I get a desktop in office, and a notebook elsewhere.

The reason I didn't go for it is actually I didn't want to use it with care.....plus it was out of stock as well

instead you should find out how you want to use your device, and then install the apps required.

For daily use, the apps I got were simply Weather, Calendar, Mail, Facebook, Skype and so on.

There is something called Surface Tweak Tool, sounds interesting and allows you to modify more to fit the way you use,
but as a 3rd party software modifying the system, do backup and use on your own risk:

Basically I have to often move from office to lab (just down the stairs),
or move to lectures with my Surface Pro.

Now I can have a fully functional, and easy to carry notebook for both lab and lectures;
but then when I move back to office, I have a large screen and standard keyboard and mouse to use my Surface Pro as a desktop.
Vertical screen is actually perfect for browsing and reading books/papers.
